Mattina, Kent & Gibbons, P.C. (MKG) is an experienced certified public accounting firm, dedicated to producing accurate and trustworthy financial data for every client, on every project, every time. We provide audit, accounting, tax and management services to growing businesses in a variety of industries.

Our history begins in 1988 when Shirley E. Gofrank, C.P.A. founded Shirley E. Beck, C.P.A., P.C. In 1991 Vincent J. Mattina, Jr., C.P.A. was admitted as a shareholder and the firm became Gofrank & Mattina, P.C.  In 2001, William T. Gibbons, Jr., C.P.A. was admitted as a shareholder and Scott C. McGovern, C.P.A. in 2007. Following these additions, the firm grew over the next few years with the acquisition of Linda Allen, P.C., Joseph, Dise & Bolterstein, P.C. and Robert Skubic C.P.A., P.C. before admitting Jennifer J. Lundy, C.P.A. as a shareholder in 2012.

Meanwhile, in 1995, Kim R. Brown, C.P.A. and Clark D. Kent, C.P.A. assumed ownership of the Lapeer office of Boyes, Wright, Pittman & Co, P.C., creating Brown & Kent P.C. In 2012, Lorretta L. Deneweth, C.P.A. was admitted as a shareholder before the merger of Gofrank & Mattina, P.C. and Brown & Kent, P.C. creating Mattina, Kent & Gibbons, P.C. in 2013.

MKG is a firm founded on the basic principle of offering “big firm” expertise and knowledge to clients, while maintaining the personal connection and responsiveness associated with a smaller firm.  We are committed – to our clients, to our community and to the accounting profession.

Lapeer Office

Clark D. Kent, CPA

Shareholder

Clark received a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration with a major in Accounting from the University of South Carolina, and is a founding member of Brown & Kent, P.C. He began his career in Myrtle Beach, SC and returned to Michigan and the Lapeer area in the late 1980s. Clark has been in public accounting for more than 35 years and has served clients in a wide variety of industries, including manufacturing, retail, agriculture, trusts, governmental entities, not-for-profit organizations, medical professionals and closely-held businesses.  He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants,  Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants, Economic Club of Lapeer and Sunrise Kiwanis – Lapeer.  He lives in Lapeer with his wife, Yvette, and has two daughters, Jackie and Elizabeth, and five grandchildren.  Outside the office Clark enjoys marathon canoe racing, mountain biking and road cycling. 

William T. Gibbons, Jr., CPA

Shareholder, Managing Partner

Bill has his Bachelor’s of Science in Accounting from Oakland University. Bill joined the firm in May 1996 and was admitted as a shareholder in January 2001.  He has been licensed to practice in Michigan since 1997. Bill serves clients in a wide variety of industries, including manufacturing, retail, medical professionals, agriculture, not-for-profit organizations, closely-held businesses, real estate accounting and taxation. He is a member of the  American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants, Economic Club of Lapeer, former President of Lapeer County Hockey Association and is the Treasurer to the Lapeer County Community Foundation. In 2008, Bill completed the Leadership Greater Rochester program. Bill is married to Jackie and has a daughter, Brooke.  Bill enjoys traveling and playing golf and hockey in his free time.

Lorretta L. Deneweth, CPA

Shareholder

Lorretta started her career with a Bachelor’s of Business Administration from Northwood University with a major in accounting. She has been in public accounting since 1993 and joined the firm in June of 1996. Lorretta has served clients in a wide variety of industries, specializing in QuickBooks training and consulting, not-for-profit organizations, school districts, manufacturing, retail, construction and taxation. She currently serves on the board for the Family Literacy Center, is a member of the Economic Club of Lapeer County, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants and previously served 18 years in various positions for the Zonta Club of Lapeer.  Lorretta is married to Mark, and has two children, Travis and Rebecca.

Eric D. Ferguson, CPA

Director of Audits

Eric received a Bachelor’s of Business Administration with a major in Accounting from Baker College. He has been in public accounting since 1999 and is a member of the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants. Eric’s experience includes governmental auditing, not-for-profit auditing, fiduciary accounting and tax services and individual and corporate taxes.

Timothy J. Reinhardt, CPA

Manager

Tim received a Bachelor’s of Science with a major in accounting from Indiana Wesleyan University. He has been in public accounting since 2001 and is a member of the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants. Tim’s experience includes governmental auditing, not-for-profit organizations, school district and tax services and individual and corporate taxes.

Nicole R. Jarvis

Manager

Nicole is a graduate of Grand Valley State University where she received a Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in Accounting in 2015.  Her experience includes governmental and not-for-profit auditing.  Nicole lives in Goodrich, MI with her dogs Bailey and Zoey. She loves the outdoors, traveling and camping with family.  Nicole joined the firm in July 2017.

Auna C. Bearup, CPA

Senior Staff Accountant

Auna received a Bachelor’s of Business Administration with a major in Accounting Management from Maranatha Baptist Bible College. She has been in public accounting since 2008 and is a member of the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants. Auna joined the firm in December 2011. Her experience includes governmental auditing, not-for-profit organizations and individual and corporate taxes. Auna is married to Nathan and they have two sons, Daniel and Lucas. She and her husband enjoy working with the youth at Calvary Bible Church of Lapeer.

Allison Johnson, CPA, MSA

Senior Staff Accountant

Allison earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from Rochester University in 2019 and a Master of Science in Accounting from Liberty University in 2020.  Allison currently resides in Lapeer, where she enjoys spending time outdoors, as well as playing tennis and golf. She joined the firm in June 2018.

Balsam Barbat

Senior Staff Accountant

Balsam joined our firm on January of 2024. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Master’s degree also in Accounting from Northwood University.  She has been in private accounting and has experience in an accounting firm back in 2020 – 2021. Balsam lives with her husband and is a mother of three. On her free time, Balsam enjoys crafting and sewing as her personal hobbies. She loves spending time with her friends and family and says her kids are her biggest inspirations in her life.

Alyssa Evely

Staff Accountant

Alyssa earned a Bachelor’s of Business Administration in Accounting from the University of Michigan – Flint in 2021 before joining MKG in August, 2022. She currently lives in Attica , with her fiancé Jeramy and their dog. Alyssa enjoys going camping, reading and spending time with family and friends.

Shelbie Lyon

Staff Accountant

Shelbie attended Ferris State University and graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration in 2015. In 2020, she returned to school and received her Bachelors of Business Administration in Accounting in just under 18 months from Western Governors University and is currently working towards her Masters. Before starting at MKG in August of 2022, she worked for a Logistics company that managed the movement of vehicle parts for General Motors. She is a huge baseball fan and enjoys traveling to different MLB and MLB ballparks around the nation.

John Layman

Staff Accountant

John joined the firm as a Staff Accountant a week before Christmas of 2023. He graduated from Cornerstone University with a Bachelor’s of Science majoring in Business Economics and Business Finance. He resides in Davison with his wife Caroline and their newborn baby boy. Outside of work, John enjoys playing the piano, keeping up with economic events and the Detroit Lions. He also enjoys hosting dinners for family and friends.

Perla Shbaklo

Staff Accountant

Perla holds a Bachelor’s degree in Banking and Finance from the Lebanese American University in Beirut, Lebanon. Recently, she accomplished her academic journey and graduated from the University of Michigan-Flint with a Master’s degree in Business Administration, specializing in Marketing and Innovation. Prior to her tenure at MKG, Perla accumulated global experience through her roles in companies based in Kuwait and the United States. Beyond her professional pursuits, she finds joy in painting, meditation, and exploring the world through travel.

Anelle A. Brazelton

Firm Administrator

Anelle is the Firm Administrator of our firm. Specifically she is responsible for supervising the firm's administrative facilities, financial and personnel functions. Anelle obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Michigan - Flint and later joined the firm in September 2010 and is an active member of the Michigan Chapter of CPA Firm Management Association. Anelle is a 2017 graduate of the Leadership Greater Rochester program.  Anelle resides in the Lapeer area, is married to Jason and has two children, Dane and Addison.  She enjoys watching her children grow and spending time with friends and family.

Shannon M. Pratt

Administrator

Shannon is an administrative assistant at our Lapeer location and maintains the front desk. She is responsible for a variety of office duties. Shannon received a certificate of completion for the executive secretary program at Skagit Business College in Washington State in 1983, and has an associate’s degree in accounting from St. Clair County Community College in Port Huron in 1999. Born and raised in Anacortes, WA she has lived in North Branch, Michigan since 1983 when she married her husband Bryan. They have three married children and 12 grandchildren. Shannon joined the firm in January 2016.

Michelle Scott

Administrator

Michelle joined the firm in December 2023. She received her Associate Degree in Business from Baker College in 2012, and is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree in Human Resources. She resides in Davison with her husband Joe, and her son Xyler. She has two dogs, Whiskey and Zelda and a cat named Tequila. In her free time, Michelle enjoys doing hair, kayaking, traveling and spending time with her family, friends and her adorable pets.

Hannah Ray

Administrative Assistant

Hannah joined the firm in January 2023 as an administrative assistant. She received her Bachelor’s in Applied Linguistics from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL. While completing her Bachelor’s degree, she was able to study in several different countries including the United Kingdom, Germany, and Spain. Hannah is an active member of the Flint School of Performing Arts Dance Division where she has studied classical ballet for nearly ten years.

Vincent J. Mattina, Jr., CPA

Shareholder

Vince has a Bachelor’s of Accountancy from Walsh College. He has been licensed to practice in Michigan since 1987 and Nevada since 2000.  He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants, Nevada Society of Certified Public Accountants, Venetian Club of Mutual Aid, and Rochester Rotary Club. Vince is also a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Rochester Rotary Charities Board, board member and past chair of the Rochester Regional Chamber of Commerce and treasurer of the Rochester Regional Chamber Foundation Board. He also serves as treasurer of the Rochester Area Prayer Breakfast Committee.

In 2007, Vince completed the Leadership Greater Rochester program and in 2009 he was the recipient of the Sunrise Pinnacle Award for Leadership Greater Rochester.  Vince was also named Vistage CE-13’s Soaring Eagle for 2015 and 2018 for his leadership and contribution to his group.  He lives in Oakland Township and is married to Dianne and has three children Vince III, Daniel and Sara, a granddaughter and a grandson. Vince joined the firm July 1988 and was admitted as a shareholder January 1991. Vince enjoys traveling and is an avid hiker.

William T. Gibbons, Jr., CPA

Bill has his Bachelor’s of Science in Accounting from Oakland University. Scott C. McGovern, CPA

Shareholder

Scott obtained his Associate’s Degree in Finance and a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration Accounting from Hawaii Pacific University. He has been licensed as a Certified Public Accountant in Michigan since 1998. He is a member of the  American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants, The Financial and Estate Planning Council of Metropolitan Detroit and is active in the community. His primary area of focus is federal and state taxation and tax planning.  He served nine years active duty in the United States Marine Corps. He joined the firm in August 1996 and was admitted as a shareholder in January 2007.

Jennifer J. Lundy, CPA, MST

Shareholder

Jennifer joined the firm in October 2002 and was admitted as a shareholder January 2012. Jenny has over 23 years’ experience as a business owner herself and dedicates her accounting practice to helping business owners and non-profits understand the financial story and direction of their operations.

Jennifer earned her Bachelor of Accountancy and a Masters of Taxation from Walsh College. Jenny has been licensed to practice in Michigan since January 2006. She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, a member of the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants and Jenny is a QuickBooks ProAdvisor. Jenny completed the Leadership Greater Rochester program in 2008. She is married to Eric and has a daughter, Ashley and son, Ryan.

Domenic A. Recchia, CPA

Shareholder

Domenic graduated in February 2012 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Accounting from Johnson & Wales University in Providence, RI.  Domenic received his CPA certification in June 2019.  He is currently a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants.

While studying at Johnson & Wales University, Domenic played for the university’s NCAA Division III hockey program, served two years as a captain and was named USCHO.com All-American his senior year.  He coaches high school hockey at the University of Detroit Jesuit in the winters and volunteers for the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office Marine Safety Division in the summers.  Domenic worked in the private sector before joining the firm in September 2017. Domenic is married to his wife, Bianca, and they live in Clinton Township.

John K. Coombs, CPA

Manager

John has a Bachelor’s of Accountancy from Walsh College. He has been licensed to practice public accounting in Michigan since 2003, and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants. John has been practicing in public accounting since 1989 and started with the firm in January 2008. John has one daughter and a dog, Marlee.
John is a member of the Not-for-Profit Section of the AICPA. John has earned the Not-for-Profit Certificate I from the AICPA and is currently pursuing his completion of Certificate II.

John is also the treasurer for the Friends of the Rochester Hills Public Library, which is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to building a close relationship between the library and its patrons through promoting knowledge of and informed interest in the library’s functions, resources and services; encouraging community participation in library activities; raising funds for various projects beyond those provided by the library; and providing support for programs for the extension and improvement of library services and resources.

Nicholas J. Laratta, CPA, MSA

Manager

Nick graduated in 2016 from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accountancy and in 2017 with a Master of Science in Accountancy.  He joined the firm in 2018 and has been licensed to practice in Michigan since September 2019.  Nick is also a participant in the 2019-2020 Leadership Greater Rochester program.

John W. Patrico

Manager

John graduated from Central Michigan University in May 2011. He is currently enrolled at Walsh College for his Master in Business Administration. John was an active member of the Student Accounting Society while at Central Michigan University. He is a 2017 graduate of the Leadership Greater Rochester program. John joined the firm in May 2011.

Sara N. Mattina, MST

Manager

Sara earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting from Central Michigan University in 2016 and a Masters in Taxation from Walsh College in 2020. Prior to joining the firm in August 2021, she has been working in the field of accounting and taxation since 2017. She is an active member of American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants, and Venetian Club of Mutual Aid where she currently holds the role of internal auditor. She also serves on the Rochester Regional Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals group as co-secretary. In 2023, Sara completed the Leadership Greater Rochester program. Outside of work, you can find Sara with her black lab mix, Scout, spending time outdoors or reading and spending time with friends and family

Barbara A. Boots

Senior Staff Accountant

Barbara has a Bachelor’s Degree in Science Administration with a major in Professional Accounting from the University of Michigan. She has been working in the field of accounting and taxation since 1987. Barbara’s main focus areas are individual, trust and estate taxes. Barbara joined the firm in October 2005. She is married to Joe and has a son, daughter and daughter-in-law.

Kimberley Barnard, MAC

Senior Staff Accountant

Kim graduated with her Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in Finance from Walsh College. She is currently working towards completing her Master of Accountancy degree by December 2021. Kim’s previous endeavors include bookkeeping and owning Casey’s Chicken in Lake Orion as well as volunteering for various local organizations. She and her husband have three wonderful grown children. In her free time, Kim enjoys reading, traveling and spending time with friends and family. Kim has been with the firm since April 2021.

Elizabeth Huck

Senior Staff Accountant

Elizabeth graduated from Walsh College in December 2013 with a Bachelor’s of Accountancy. She has experience with bookkeeping, payroll, auditing, and cannabis industry accounting. Elizabeth has three children that keep her busy. In her free time, she enjoys visiting and riding her horse Winston, and spending time with her family. Elizabeth has been with the firm since August of 2022.

Colin McKnight

Staff Accountant

Colin graduated from Grand Valley State University in December of 2021 with a Bachelors in Business Administration with a major in Finance and a minor in Accounting. Colin joined the firm in July of 2022 as his first foray into the world of accounting. In his free time Colin enjoys watching sports, traveling and being with friends. He currently resides in Troy where he enjoys playing with his French Bulldog Maizey.

Brendan Cameron

Staff Accountant

Brendan joined our firm as an Intern in December of 2021 and moved up to become a Staff Accountant on May 2022. After graduating from Romeo High School, he worked at TCF bank as a teller for two years. Brendan is currently working on his Bachelor’s degree in Accountancy at Walsh College and plans to take the CPA exam when he graduates. He is an active member of MICPA. In his free time, Brendan enjoys playing board/card games, watching sports and playing outdoor games such as volleyball and basketball. Brendan also trained jiu-jitsu for six years.

John Lynch

Staff Accountant

John joined the firm in February of 2024 as a Staff Accountant. He graduated from Oakland University in December of 2023 with a Bachelor’s Degree in General Management. He plans to obtain his CPA license in the future after gaining industry experience in the field of Accounting. John enjoys weightlifting, riding motorcycles, and spending time exploring the world. John also loves to volunteer his time at Gateway Assembly as a backline technician and lighting operator.

Anelle A. Brazelton

Firm Administrator

Anelle is the Firm Administrator of our firm. Specifically she is responsible for supervising the firm's administrative facilities, financial and personnel functions. Anelle obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Michigan - Flint and later joined the firm in September 2010 and is an active member of the Michigan Chapter of CPA Firm Management Association. Anelle is a 2017 graduate of the Leadership Greater Rochester program.  Anelle resides in the Lapeer area, is married to Jason and has two children, Dane and Addison.  She enjoys watching her children grow and spending time with friends and family.

Sue Spierling

Administrator

Sue works part-time for the firm as an administrative assistant.  She is married to John and has two daughters, a son-in-law and a grandson.  Sue joined the firm in December 2002.

Cindy Schoenjahn

Administrator

Cindy works full-time for the firm as an office assistant and is responsible for a variety of administrative duties. Cindy joined the firm in 2007 with the acquisition of the Linda L. Allen, PLC firm. She has her Associates degree from Macomb Community College. She is married to Kevin and has two children Michael and Courtney.  Michael is a veteran of the US Navy and just graduated from Walsh College.  Courtney is currently in the Navy and pursuing her degree while serving.  She is married to Ryan and they are expecting their first baby in September.  Cindy enjoys traveling and spending time with friends and family.

Joan F. Arndt

Administrator

Joan is the receptionist in our Rochester office. She and her husband have two children who are recent graduates of Michigan (Physical Therapy) and Western Michigan (Aviation Mechanics). She enjoys reading, audiobooks, podcasts and knitting in her spare time. She has been with the firm since 2017.

Angelie Itable

Administrator

Angelie joined the firm in March 2023 as an administrative assistant. She studied Legal Management in the San Beda University in the Philippines as a pre-law major. She also pursued a degree in Arts and Literature studies majoring in English Literature. Angelie likes to read, watch movies and documentaries and listen to podcasts on her spare time. She has an Australian Cattle dog, Winchester, who is the light of her life.
